October 15 — A New Education

We arrived in Chapel Hill at the Zoom Culture office in the early afternoon on Wednesday.

At that point our new education began.

Situated in a quaint new development called Southern Village, the Zoom Culture Production office is a cubicled warehouse of video equipment. A few dozen editors, regional managers, production synthesizers and IT guys work in their various corners and make digital magic happen. With our rig parked across the lot from the office, we set up camp with our laptops in the Outdoor Channel arena. Instructional champions Brian and Leon settled in to teach us all they could relay and all we could absorb about editing digital video.

Then, things got even better.

Brian cooked us dinner.

Before we knew it the weekend had arrived, and since we had so much to work on, we spent those two days usually reserved for repose to work like crazy monkeys. Loaded up with double laptops in the backpack, we made swift use of the Honda and rode daily into the Caribou Cafe. This coffee shop had all the makings of an ideal work environment: Billie Holiday on the speakers, Caramel Apple Blasts and Spiced Chai from the bar, and power outlets. Aside from brief bagel breaks, sushi siestas, and midnight napping, we worked straight through 'til Monday morning.

At which time we re-entered the Zoom School For Aspiring Video Producers and got jiggy with it.
