West Dennis Beach - Dennis

In the Cape Cod region that is tentative about kiting on their beaches, West Dennis Beach is as good as it gets. The far west end of the beach next to the rock jetty is home to the local kiteboarders. The jetty helps to mellow out the chop when the trades are from the southeast. The water is little over waist deep for quite a distance out with a sandy bottom. The trades blow side-onshore so the ability to stay to windward is more necessary than at a solid sideshore beach.

This region of the Cape has consistent winds in spring and summer. Many days average between 12-20mph - perfect for kiting. During fall they get some epic days from the tropical storms to the south. About 1/2 mile down the beach is the windsurfing area. Stay upwind of the windsurfing area at all costs - the windsurfers aren't to keen on kiting yet. Below the windsurfing area is 2 miles of swimming area where no wind sports are allowed. The water in the summer is in the mid to high 60's. We really had a couple great sessions at this beach. $10/day parking fee.

Directions: From US 6 take exit 8 and drive on Station Ave south to SR 28. Turn left onto SR 28. Turn right on School St. Turn left on Lower County Rd and then a quick right onto lighthouse Rd. When you come to the rotary you will see the toll both for the beach parking and the beginning of Davis Beach Rd. Take this road all the way until it dead-ends at a parking lot next to the water. The beach is a short walk from the parking lot.
