Telemark Skiing

Deer Valley - Park City

We arrived at Deer Valley hoping to satisfy our desire for Utah powder. One problem - they are the only resort left on the planet that doesn't allow snowboarding! So not to be a poor sport I strapped on my telemark skis and decided to hike my way to the top of the mountain - to see what I was missing on my snowboard. I was soon informed as I worked my way up the side of the run that I was not allowed to ski against the flow of traffic. The patroller then told me that if I was in the trees and he couldn't see me that it wasn't a problem. So my adventure began and after 4 1/2 hours of bushwacking/skiing I arrived in the beatiful bowl behind Mt. Baldy. There I had a heaven-sent lunch composed of a granola bar and Fruiti-Os. Since it was getting late in the afternoon I made my way down the groomed runs of Deer Valley and back to the parking lot. My legs were like jello and my mind reeling but I wouldn't trade the feeling for anything - except possibly a real meal! I love exploring the mountains. Although, Deer Valley is definetely not a telemarking uphill destination - I extracted my fun quotient from the hill and therefore I thought it deserved mention.
